The making of://

"This is a collection of movies, storyboards and images taken during the making of short film 'The Seed', which I directed. It was produced by Nexus Productions. "
Very insightful!

Visual approach://

The ideas for my idents are quite conceptual, I don;t want to overcomplicate things when it comes to visualising just for the sake of making it more visual. I wanted to keep the results quite direct, and particularly with only 10 seconds, I wanted the visuals to remain quite bold and simple. With the concept of using subtitles, I didn't really want to take snapshots of certain frames from the films as the majority of the audience woulnd't really be able to relate to. Instead, I wanted to keep them engaged with what's happening and make them curious on what it's about.

With this in mind, I have decided to focus the visual approach to vector based illustrations mixing with simple and effective motion. I think this would be an ideal way to approach especially as it seems that I'm still getting to grips with After Effects, with this decision  can focus more on the overall design direction.

Below are some examples of motion graphics that demonstrate the effectiveness of vector based illustrations in motion - something that I'm looking to achieve.

Squarepusher - My red hot car

DVD Interface://

As part of my research towards developing my own dvd interface, I've looked into a range of existing dvd titles screens, paying more attention to the use of transitions, buttons, interactivity and general aesthetics. The general idea of the dvd interfaces is that they follow the theme of the film/content, usually using imagery taken from the actual production. This would definitely be the direction that I'll be looking to pursue as I want the whole resolution (both dvd interface and packaging) to have a standard identity throughout.

I think the ones that work the best are the ones that use strong imagery, with incorporated elements in them, such as the Amelie scene selection. The transitions also make a huge impact, as it makes the user interface seem more like an 'experience' rather than just the usual dvd.

周星馳 - Stephen Chow://

As posted on my 'design practice' blog, I have decided to work on a series of 5 idents for a season of films that feature Hong Kong actor Stephen Chow. One of the main reasons why I've decided to work on this genre was because of the difference in comedy styles in comparison to british and american films that are tagged under the same genre; his work's are quite unique and may not be understood by an international audience.

The majority of Chow's films particularly with the earlier stuff were targeted towards a more local audience, as the jokes are often centred around events and issues that circulate Hong Kong. This is probably the reason why the majority of his work has been kept within Asia, where it has been a influence on the film industry, society and culture. At the end of the day, I have grown up watching Chow's films and wanted to work on something that would be quite new and different for everyone else. I guess it also adds to the reality of the brief, where I somehow have to sustain an audience's attention on a series of films that may initially seem quite weird and bizarre.

Background information://
Stephen Chow's career started off working on temporary roles on one of Hong Kong's major tv broadcasting company; TVB in the early 80's. Throughout his career he has been involved with over 30 films as either an actor, producer, screen writer or director. Almost all of his films are comedies of some sort and he rarely plays a serious character throughout.

Some of his more well known titles include://
- Fight back to school (1991)
- God of gamblers (1991)
- Royal tramp (1992)
- Flirting scholar (1993)
- Six million dollar man (1995)
- Forbidden city cop (1996)
- Shaolin soccer (2001)
- Kung Fu Hustle ( 2004)
- CJ7 (2008)

Sample clips showing the type of films, style of humour and the tone of voice of films that feature Stephen Chow://

Trailer for the God of Cookery ( 1996)://

Clip of a selected part of God of Cookery://

Scene from King of Comedy (1998)
No subtitles unfortunately but for those who want to know, this is basically a scene where Chow's character is auditioning for a chance to play the main actor of a film://

Clip from Kung Fu Hustle (2004)://

DUBBED clip from Shaolin Soccer (2001)
Clip from Shaolin Soccer, directed and featuring Chow himself as the main character, this demonstrates Chow's humour in his work, where he often exaggerates things to the limit.

Personally, I really don't like it when a movie is dubbed. Not only does it often make it sound quite forced, it loses the original film's tone of voice. As i speak cantonese fluently, Chow's films are not a problem for me, but reading the subtitles itself can sometimes be quite entertaining, because they're either translated inaccurately or they will be altered to fit into the audience's taste. This is probably an area that I'd look into - subtitles, i'd probably try to incorporate this is some way if possible into my ideas://

Rather funny but maybe not so relevent clip. This is basically a Shaolin Soccer tribute://

Clip from SixMillion Dollar Man (1995)
Bit of a random part of the film, which won't really make much sense, but worth watching to get an idea of the type of humour he incorporates. ( Excuse the 2 overlapping audio)://

Really nice set of idents for FilmFour. Showing the results of combining slick video with subtle motion graphics, the whole concept reflect the channel aswell as a film dedicated channel. Good examples for a set of idents, that also work well as individual idents. Designed by Channel4's creative team 4Creative - they look like rather decent print + screen based place to work for!://

Design for digital /

Thought i'd make a post dedicated to some interesting digital based design that inspire me throughout the course of this module.

1st one is the recent Honda Civic Ad that shows good timing and effecting video editing://

First impressions make it seem that it's purely stop motion, but alot of post production editing might have been involved://

Amazing bit of motion graphics with video and a bit of minimal tunes!

This probably isn't very relevant but wanted to put this in anyway as it's rather entertaining + inspiring showing a good combination of music and video.
