Editorial / Layout inspiration

A very solid bit of editorial by one of my all time favourite German design studios. Onlab's recent projects demonstrate their consisten quality and inspiring design solutions.

Custom Type

Been looking for some inspiration for typeface designs as this is one of the design route's that I've been working on lately for the Ocon brief.

Catalogtree - Monadnock architecture
Catalogtree created a postscript file of the custom typeface of each letter that forms the Monadnock name. (M,O,N,A,DC). This would then be randomly picked and used for printed materials by the architects. I interesting idea of using a typeface and keeping the idea alive and fresh each time it is used.

Studio Oscar - Stussy
Quite a relevant piece of type design that is formed out of 3D cubes, printed on a single colour and repeated to produce a pattern. Due to the nature of the the subject that I'm working on for Ocon - which is construction / architecture, I've been experimenting with some 3D shapes, isometric type to reflect the construction aspect of the client. The idea of being able to rework the type into a pattern has also been considered for the Living Space brief as it incorporates interior graphics and signage systems.

Branding by Toko

Branding for BSA Architects by Toko. A great example of a really simple but well considered and executed brand identity and communication materials. The logo is so abstract, simply formed out of a few bold shapes, the identity itself is the chose of colour and the way it's applied aswell as the logo itself. The simplicity of the logo allows it to work seamlessly with a range of applications from web to printed business cards.

Posters by Lundgren Lindqvis

A really nice set of poster designs by a recently discovered Swedish design studio Lundgren Lidnqvis.
Quite surprisingly, these were designed for a dance & reggae night which were held as a monthly event. Really like the well structured layout which you often see in posters of this sector.

Their poster and publication design for Creative Collective Fashion week is pretty interesting aswell. Again, really nice layout and well considered print specification with an added touch of perforation, which allows users to interact with it.

Linotype publication by Magma Brand Design

Very well considered publication for Linotype designed by Germany based design studio Magma Brand Design. I really like the layout considerations and overall execution of the whole thing ranging from the type chosen throughout to the choice of stock used for the cover and the spreads. Can't help but be inspired but such a nicely designed publication, for both my design practice and directly towards my LCA Catalogue.

Door lock

Interesting and humorous lock system for a door, possibly not the most efficient lock but definitely something that makes you question whether it can actually be viable or not. A piece that is making me consider the more daring and unconventional ideas that are involved with graphic design around interior spaces.

Calendar by Calouette

A pretty innovative calendar by Calouette. Probably not very relevant to my design practice but definitely quite inspiring and an influence towards my ideas and how I should approach the brief I'm working on for Ocon Apartments.

The calendar is constructed out ot 366 acrylic sheets that has been laser cut into, forming each date and month. This provides the user with an interesting focal point to their office, which is both functional and innovative. The calendar allows users to handwrite notes for each date, and as they aren't throwing anything away, the calendar can be reused again and again.

Neue Branding

A newly discovered design studio based in Oslo with some amazing work and a solid client list. One of the main piece that caught my attention was the brand identity and materials for Nordkyn, a tourist attraction in Norway that has a focus on nature. Their concept was to focus on the notion of nature, while still communicating an exciting and forward thinking brand, the solution is a 'live logo that changes along with direction and temperature' Neue's design solution for their identity is bold and innovative, which seems to work extremely well throughout a range of both digital and printed outputs. Eventhough each logo is slightly different, it's still easily recognisable as being part of Nordkyn.

For my Living Space brief, I will be rebranding and developing a range if wayfinding and printed materials for Ocon Construction Limited who currently has numerous projects going on around the UK, therefore one of my ideas was to redevelop the whole brand across all the projects that they have. Something to think about anyway.

Terada Design

Some interesting and clinical looking signage system by Terada Design, a Toyko based design and architecture firm. I just love how simple the format it, using a single sheet of material that bends and adapts to the 3D environment.
